View Full Version : Questionable New Posters

I have noticed 2 (in general), 1 (in particular) new posters who dont appear to be here for the right reasons~~~

I guess the best bet is the good old 'just ignore them/ him'?
I just hate to have people come along and spoil good threads with inane comments or advertisements...

I also dont think that every new member needs to be greeted by the welcome wagon; at least not until we all see if and what they post...Or what the profile says, too...

Maybe this thread should have been a PM---or a couple PMs...

but I didnt really know what path was best.

I think this is a good topic. Maybe some people here donīt even know what those users are up to.
If we had Moderators they could easily delete these posts and report the users to the Admin and he could delete their accounts. Since we donīt, I think itīs better to contact the Admin and ask him to do all the work.
Itīs a matter of security. Even though this is an old story, many people still donīt recognize these attempts of viruses and spywares.

Iīve sent Mikeb a PM, just in case he hasnīt this this topic or the posts yet.

LisaT
06-05-2009, 04:25 PM
Truthfully, I have PM'ed mikeb several times in the past....to no avail...
I have also suggested things to Dave in PMs......things that I think are worthy of consideration...like a stickied Introduction Thread..

I KNOW DC is busy busy busy....and what goes on here is probably not a high priority...but MikeB??? I dont know...

Ive offered to moderate...ages ago...Theres a very good chance that no outside involvement is necessary...

I just dont like to see some yo-yos treading on this turf....

Ooooohhh I sound really crabby in that post! Sorry!! ;)

Scarlet

Oh that sux.... I mean, wee need to be sure weīre secure on an internet forum like this. If Dave and Mikeb donīt pay attention to this, this forum will soon turn into a spammer party place.

At least we have already sent messages to them, they canīt ignore it forever.

Perhaps we really need some mods here, and they should pay attention to that too. Iīve run websites before and it was just me and a friend and it was tough! If we had more people helping it would have been easier.

^^^ i think that just proved your point, lisa.

I agree...if spammers start clogging up the forum here, it may start to run off the real posters.

On one of the forums that I used to post, you had to sign up, then you had a confirmation email sent to you. If you did not click the link contained in the email, you did not have permission to post. I wonder if that's an option for this board? :D

Exactly!!

Lots of good ideas in this thread--MikeB??? Where you at, man??!!

LisaT
06-06-2009, 04:25 AM
Mr Goldbar was just here spamming for about 20 minutes...

I dont get it---is it necessary to post the same %^%% over & over & over??!!

For spammers it is....
This could get worse than telemarketing :(

*cough* Sorry, I'm questioning whether MikeB is a real person or not *cough*

Sorry. Not trying to be rude or anything... He's never here, and he never answers any PMs. *shrugs* I'm just sayin' is all.

I am glad the situation has been alleviated. I realize I'm not on here as often as I was before, but I still like to feel free to come here and chatter and yuk it up with y'all and not have to put up with that kind of crap. I am SO GLAD it's handled.

thanks Dave!!

Id like to reiterate....I think there should be a bit of a 'grace period' before some of us jump in and welcome every new poster who signs in....

Lets see if new posters post...get involved...

Just a thought.

Scarlet
06-14-2009, 05:58 PM
I agree Lisa. I think the new user should make a friendly manifestation and then weīll know how to proceed.
Thatīs why a sticky "Introduce Yourself" topic would be very useful. or even a section just for that.

Oh, and i saw mikeb online this morning lol

tdaniel.bryant
07-03-2009, 10:53 AM
I think that if you don't allow a grace period before the welcome comes in, you may annoy the person into putting you on the Ignore List. Speaking of Ignore list; that's where spammers need to be!

LisaT
07-03-2009, 05:14 PM
I totally agree....we dont need to welcome every single new sign up...People need to get comfortable, check out the site, and decide how they want to proceed before being automatically welcomed....

tdaniel.bryant
07-03-2009, 07:33 PM
I say that we keep an eye on spammers and make sure we don't log-off with viruses following us. We may need to start a group (in the groups catagory part of the forum of course) that members keep an eye out for suspicious posters.

Scarlet
07-04-2009, 07:00 AM
A group looks sounds like a good idea.
And welcoming someone new is not the way to make people feel welcome. I think once we see a post from a new member and realize they want to be here for the same purposes we are, then you're free to exchange messages and all.
It's a matter of being careful. After all, this is the internet and you're never sure of the kind of people you're talking to: maniacs, perverts, spammers, hackers....

tdaniel.bryant
07-04-2009, 03:43 PM
Or Salesmen!!!!

tdaniel.bryant

No offence to business people!

Scarlet

like telemarketers? LOL no offense, I understand people need to work and make money, but I really can't stand telemarketing.

I'm sure all of us would love to take a shotgun and blast the telephone that they use (recording machine included.). Uh, I hate recorded phone messages.

angelwings
07-08-2009, 01:54 PM
I dislike the fact salesmen come to your front door when you don't answer they come to the backdoor. What is bad is they are supposed to have permits here some don't even have a permit. The police here say call them if the salesperson doesn't have a permit. Some of the neighbors have no soliciting signs up.

tdaniel.bryant
07-08-2009, 07:53 PM
You have door-to-door salesmen? In this town, a shotgun would greet them and scare 'em off without firing a shot.

Scarlet
07-09-2009, 09:42 AM
thank god we don't have those here!

tdaniel.bryant
07-09-2009, 03:05 PM
We don't have them in rural Alabama towns.

Lemonpoptart
07-16-2009, 03:18 PM
I have a "No Soliciting" sign on my front door. This applies to not only sales people, but religion peddlers too. My statue of the Virgin Mary in the front yard seems to attract certain people who think I am headed to hell in a handbasket. *rollseyes*

New people... I don't see anything wrong with welcoming new people when they join, and they show themselves to be friendly and not ax-welding psychos. :p

Questionable posters? LOL Does that term necessarily apply to only the new people? ;)

LisaT
07-16-2009, 03:25 PM
LOL!!!!

I hear ya, LPT....
fortunately, there havent been any 'buy gold' spammers since that episode I started this thread about..

I still believe in the 'grace period'...after someone registers, wait & see if they join in before doing the 'welcome to the site' stuff...

LisaT
07-16-2009, 03:26 PM
I get yearly Jehovahs Witnesses at my door, with their pamphlets..
I politely excuse them, and ask them to send my love to the Osmonds...

Lemonpoptart
07-16-2009, 03:28 PM
Exactly!!! They need to not just register, (duh, a chimp could do that), but they need to come in here and talk and schmooze!! :D

Now.... about those Questionable people..... :p ;)

I meant the young Mormon recruits...but pictured the JW's booklets!

We call the Mormon recruits "Mission Scaries" instead of Missionaries. :D LOL!!! (yes I have a reason. Not trying to be cruel... but I've LITERALLY been cornered by them... two of em cornered me like a cat and refused to let me by. Not I'm not kidding. Thus they have earned this nickname from me.)

Yeah they do have their pamphlets they peddle. Watchtower is it? No idea. I'm too busy running away from them! LOL!!!:D

I hope I am not one of those questionable posters. I am trying not to post so much on here anymore. I come on here mainly to check any messages I may or may not have. As for posting I will post if I see something of interest to me.

tdaniel.bryant
07-18-2009, 05:30 PM
I have none of your problems w/ Mormons and JW's. We actually only have CHRISTIAN peddlers and they won't corner ya'. We Christians are polite and will NOT force our beliefs on anyone. If we come to a house, we will urge you to share our belief (not religion) and will give a pamphlet IF YOU WANT IT.

kaylee1319

i disagree-- i've been bothered/harassed like you wouldn't believe.

tdaniel.bryant
07-19-2009, 09:45 AM
Maybe that because you are above the Mason Dixon line and live in a city with many people. I should have mention that this is how small town Christians are. Some pastor and church members will strongly urge, but I've never actually seen/heard/ or witnessed a Christian who will literally corner some-one, but if that happens; I'd like to know.

Lemonpoptart
07-19-2009, 10:33 AM
I've only had pushy JW and Mormons. Actually, only the two Mormons were the only ones to physically corner me, while insisting I was going to burn in hell.

I guess anyone can be pushy... but this is the experiences I've had.

I am a Catholic, as most of you know. I see no reason to hide who and what I am... but I'm not going to beat you to death with my rosary beads about it. If someone wants to know, I'd be happy to talk to them. Otherwise, I am not going to bug 'em. :)

i live in the middle of nowhere... i'm 13 miles away from the nearest town, and it only has a kroger and a couple gas stations. :)

Oh, well all I can say is that around here we don't do that and that I don't know how Yankee preachers work.

kaylee1319

not referring to preachers.... i'm referring to the public!

my uncle is a preacher. he's pretty chill. :)

he preaches at a church just down the road from me. it used to be packed every sunday, but now there's only 10 or less people who go. :( so sad.

i grew up going to that church.

tdaniel.bryant

Well, it's cool to have a preacher uncle. My grandpa was a preacher.

Lemonpoptart
07-19-2009, 11:33 AM
My cousin is a preacher. Most of my uncles were/are deacons. I realize this is confusing. LOL I'm a convert. :)

tdaniel.bryant

I'm a Baptist, but not a convert. It is kinda confusin'.

Lemonpoptart
07-19-2009, 11:47 AM
I was baptized Catholic as a newborn to please my Dad's mother, and then was raised a Southern Baptist by my Southern Baptist Momma and my non-practicing Catholic father. Dad's family all lived "up North". So I didn't get much "catholic influence". However, I knew an elderly Catholic couple that I loved very much. I always felt 'drawn' to the Catholic Church. So when I was in my early 20's, I converted. My little joke is that "that Baptism must've really TOOK". LOL

I am Baptist. The man that lived behind my family was the preacher of the church we belong to. When he retired the preacher the church has now used to live up the street. I know a lot of Catholic people. We are always asking questions about each others beliefs. I have learned a little bit.

kaylee1319
07-21-2009, 12:52 PM
although i'm anything BUT religious, i do enjoy learning about other's beliefs.

i'm taking a religion class next quarter (if i can afford it). :)

i have an aunt who is catholic-- it's very interesting.

tdaniel.bryant

There's a saying. I ain't into religion; I just love the Lord!

Lemonpoptart
07-23-2009, 02:42 PM
Well, it's not really about "religion". It's just "faith", ya know? I cannot imagine being anything in this world other than Catholic. I love our faith. I know not everyone does, and I'm not judgin'. But ya know.. I do love it. Completely. :)
