The Red Wings and Penguins are in the Stanley Cup Finals again this year. A repeat of last year's Cup Final. Next year, the Chicago Blackhawks will be just as talented, wiser, and more experienced. It makes me so happy to see players like Toews and Kane emerge as young superstars. They are the future of the NHL. My hat is off to the Blackhawks. It was a great run for them this year.
Detroit played the final games without Nick Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk and Jonathan Ericsson -- all key players in the Red Wings lineup. They will all be back for the Pittsburgh series. Detroit is a very deep and experienced team. They are also much older than the Penguins. Steve Yzerman, Detroit's beloved captain for 20 seasons once said: "When we're losing, we're considered old. When we're winning, everyone says we're 'experienced.'"
Pittsburgh is back in the finals again this year, and that is no accident. Sidney Crosby, as much as I'm not a fan, exemplifies the new NHL -- he is fast, skilled and at a young age, wise beyond his years. Evgeni Malkin has come alive in the playoffs and is a fast, strong, playmaking superstar. The difference this year is that they are rolling along at a different clip than last season, and are sure they are going to win it all. You can see a different kind of confidence this year. And in this year's conference final, the Penguins bucked tradition and skated proudly around the ice clutching the Prince of Wales trophy. See the video here: http://tinyurl.com/pbkvkp
The Penguins also believe that they have goaltending that is better than Detroit's and that they have four lines and defense pairings that can match- up with anything Detroit can throw at them. On paper, the Wings are still a superior team. I'm still picking the Red Wings to win the cup. Sure, I'm a biased Wings fan. I also grew up in Detroit and waited 38 years for them to win another Stanley Cup (I don't think I was aware of the Red Wings until I was 5 years old, so let's say 33 years). This series will go 7 games though. And it is going to be a great one.
GO WINGS!!!
